Don’t Block your Blessings

The moral of this story is going to be a follows: Don’t block your own blessings.

Follow me.

You may know that I had the honor of being a part of The Highlights Foundation’s first ever Muslim Storytellers Fellowship. It was an amazing cohort and I was in awe being around such a talented group of folks.

You probably don’t know that I did my application the day it was due based on the persistent encouragement of an author friend.

I honestly wasn’t going to apply because I didn’t think I was going to get it. I felt like my stories needed to be deeper, have a greater focus on faith, and I hadn’t published enough—especially since I was aiming for middle grade with only picture book credentials.

I had a wonderful time each and every time I met up with this group no matter if it was online or at the Highlights Foundation campus. I got so much more than a writing experience because of our moments of vulnerability and eagerness to get all out of the experience that we could.

Still with me?

Fast forward to another Highlights Scholarship opportunity from a few months ago. I thought the whole novel retreat sounded perfect, as I am drafting two middle grade novels right now. However, I’d already received one opportunity. I would be wasting my time and theirs applying again.

I talked it over with a few writing buddies, and despite their encouragement to just give it a shot, I was still doubtful. It was my husband who pointed out that I was counting myself out and removing myself from potential opportunities. I spruced up my middle grade sample. I filled out the application. I received the blessing.
